Grit that finds its way into sewers causes challenges in downstream treatment processes. Typically, it is removed from the system and sent to landfill, at significant financial and carbon cost. Our work with Scottish Water, Zero Waste Scotland and the local recycled aggregate supply chain will pilot the processing and reuse of grit as a construction material. As well as contributing to Scotland’s ambitious Circular Economy agenda, this will provide significant cost and carbon benefits compared with the current practice of sending grit to landfill.
